Upgrading your iPhone to iOS 5.1 through iTunes will update your baseband, removing your chances for an unlock. Please follow this tutorial on how to update to iOS 5.1 using a custom ipsw which prevents your iphone baseband from getting upgraded, if you rely on ultrasn0w unlock. This jailbreak for iOS 5.1 is tethered which means you will have to connect your device to the computer everytime you reboot.

Before we begin with the guide make sure you download and save the following on your desktop.

Once you have downloaded Redsn0w and iOS 5.1, place them in one folder for your convenience. Extract the redsn0w archive and you should be able to see 5 extracted files from that archive like the below screenshot.

Step 1 : If your device is already on iOS 5.1, skip this step and proceed with the next step.

Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes. Select your iPhone from the list of devices and press down the shift key and hit the restore button on iTunes. You should now see a pop-up asking you to point towards your iPhone firmware iPSW file. Point iTunes to the folder where you have downloaded the iPSW and the restore process will begin.

iTunes will now update your iPhone to iOS 5.1.

Step 2 : Once iTunes have updated your iPhone, launch redsn0w (make sure you run redsn0w as administrator by right clicking on it and selecting - "Run as administrator")

Step 4 : Follow the onscreen instructions to enter DFU mode. It is very important that you follow the instructions very carefully.

Switch off your iPhone
Hold the power button for 3 seconds
Now, without releasing the power button also press and hold the home button for 10 seconds.
Without releasing the home button, release the power button but continue holding the home button until your device enters DFU mode and you redsn0w automatically detects it.
