Apple's patent submissions indicate that the company giant is working on face recognition patterns for iPhones and iPods and iPads using powerful camera patterns. The news comes from patentlyapple a team indulged in gaining Intel on Apple patents and news related to Apple. The site notes that this system would be able to recognize face, phone number, movie, book, prices, time, music, email, map, or bar code related elements. This system would be able to recognize face, phone number, movie, book, prices, time, music, email, map, or bar code related elements.

The advanced camera system will be able to read IBSN numbers, pricing symbols, phone numbers and much more – all in context. For instance, you'll be able to scan a poster of a movie as noted in our cover graphic. From that you'll be able to scan faces and be given contextual menu options pertaining to that face or scan a phone number and be given the option to put it into your contact information or touch the photo of the movie image and call up a movie trailer or access to show times and other relevant information. You'll be able to scan a URL off of a magazine and then touch the URL on the image on your iPad and be given the option to activate the URL.

face detection coming soon for iPhones and iPads

"If the detected human face is recognized... an operation of the (device) can be modified based upon the recognized human face," the application reads. "The modification can include executing a pre-defined set of operations such as opening email, opening text messages, and so forth."

The application describes a system that could scan and detect a specific user's face, and then unlock the device after the person has been recognized. If the user cannot be identified by the system, they would then be presented with the option of entering a security code to unlock the iPhone or iPad.
