Fix iPhone3GS 6.15 Baseband Downgrade Errors - Redsn0w downgrade

Earlier this week, the iPhone Dev-Team has released popular jailbreak tool with the ability to downgrade iPhone3G and iPhone3GS baseband from b allowing iPhone users to unlock their device using Ultrasn0w. The problem with 6.15 baseband was that it messed up the GPS settings of iPhone3GS and cause battery drainage to some iPhones.

The recent redsn0w update has helped many iPhone users with iPad baseband 6.15 to downgrade their devices. However, a good portion of iPhone users have reported that they were unable to downgrade their iPhone baseband and that their device was still having 6.15 baseband. Based on the various help articles posted on various sites regarding how to fix the error, we have prepared a guide with all the possible troubleshooting errors and how to fix them.

How To Fix 6.15 Baseband Downgrade Errors

Q) I have successfully downgraded the iPad baseband but I'm unable to get any signal in my iPhone
A) Some users have reported that after downgrading the baseband, you need to re-install mobile substrate to and then install ultrasn0w to get carrier signal.

Q) I think my GPS is still broken, although I see that the baseband has been downgraded
A) All you need to do is reinstall mobile substrate from Cydia. This has proved to be effective for many users.

Q) I've tried re-installing mobile substrate but still no GPS
A) You will have to use iFunbox or iFile or iPhone browser to delete the old gps cache, go to this path

/var/root/Library/Caches/locationd

and delete locationd folder. Reboot and retry and it should work.

Q) Activation ? I'm not using the sim that came along with the phone! Does that mean I cannot activate and downgrade 6.15 baseaband ?
A) We'll you can use sam to activate your iPhone. Technically SAM provides the same activation as an active sim card. The whole point is to make sure that baseband is "started" before downgrade.

Q) I'm unable to downgrade my iPhone's 6.15 baseband at all. I've tried it several times just to be even more dissatisfied.
A) This is going to be a long turn around. There are many people who have reported that they were unable to downgrade the baseband at all. Here are few tips that you need to follow while performing the downgrade
  • Restore your iPhone to 5.1.1(fresh restore). Take a backup of your data and then perform a clean restore.
  • Flash iPad 6.15 baseband after the restore.
  • After flashing the iPad baseband make sure you activate your iPhone by entering the sim card.
  • After activating your iPhone3GS or 3G with the sim, power off your device by holding the power button and then sliding on the screen. Yes! you need to shut down this way to avoid problems with ramdisk.
  • After following the steps above, follow this guide to downgrade the baseband and it should work.
Q) I'm tired! I even lost my signal - I don't care about downgrading 6.15 baseband and I'm fine with it. How can I get carrier signal back??
A) User redsn0w and flash 6.15 baseband again to get back carrier signal

Tip :  Windows users can try this method : Copy redsn0w.exe to the following location :
C:Program Files\CommonFiles\Apple\Apple Application Support
(This actually is not a new trick, there was time when ppl were advised to use Blackra1n the same way by copying it to Application support folder)

To sum up this is the procedure you should ideally follow:
  • Fresh Restore
  • Fresh 6.15 Baseband Flash
  • Activate
  • Attempt Downgrade

It works on hacktivation too.

By activation, we mean your baseband should atleast start working which is possible only when you get carrier signal.
