How To Update And Jailbreak iPod Touch 4G On iOS 5.1 Using Redsn0w
The following guide will help you to update your iPod Touch 4G on iOS 5.1 and jailbreak it using redsn0w. Please note that this guide is for windows users only. We'll be covering the same guide for Mac users soon. Also, please be adviced that this is a tethered jailbreak and will require you to connect your iPod to computer and run redsn0w everytime your iPod restarts.
Before we begin, download the latest version of redsn0w and iOS 5.1 firmware.

Step 1 : Once download is complete, place the downloaded files in a new folder on your desktop. Unzip redsn0w.
Step 2 : If you are already on iOS 5.1, skip this step and go to Step 3
Connect your iPod to the computer and launch iTunes. Wait for iTunes to list your device on left side of the screen. Once done, click on your iPod from the list then hold down shift key and click on the restore button on iTunes.
Navigate to the folder where you have downloaded the iOS 5.1 and click open. iTunes will now update your iPod firmware.
Step 3 : Launch Redsn0w and click on jailbreak button
Step 4 : Plug in your iPod and turn it off and click next. Follow the instructions carefully to enter DFU mode.
Instructions For Getting Into DFU Mode
- Switch off your iPhone
- Hold the power button for 3 seconds
- Now, without releasing the power button also press and hold the home button for 10 seconds.
- Without releasing the home button, release the power button but continue holding the home button until your device enters DFU mode and you redsn0w automatically detects it.
Step 5 : You iPod will now reboot and the jailbreak process will begin...
Step 6 : Select the option 'install cydia'
You iPod will reboot again and redsn0w will jailbreak and install cydia in your device. You should be able to see Cydia on your springboard.
How To Boot Into Tethered Mode
Remember that the current jailbreak for iOS 5.1 is tethered and you'll have to run redsn0w and select the option "Just Boot". Follow the instructions below to boot your iPod into tethered mode.
Step 1 : Connect your iPod to the computer and then launch redsn0w and click extras
Step 2 : From the extras menu select just boot and follow the instructions.
